At 70 percent of emissions output, buildings are the biggest slice of New York City’s energy pie. But in the commercial sector, energy use is just a tenth of the operating cost for most buildings. The other 90 percent? Most of it goes to employee salaries and benefits. To be truly sustainable, the office of the future needs to expand the definition of sustainability to include environmental measures that improve occupant comfort and productivity. Our 2016 conference will examine strategies for building owners, tenants and municipalities to make improvements that lower energy use and have bottom-line impact.
