The always interesting, informative and entertaining Larry Harmon’s air sealing in commercial buildings session should be on your calendar. Larry’s session will focus on both air leakage and thermal deficiencies. He’ll discuss how, when, where and why to test; how to determine if there is a problem; how to fix what is found and finally, how to test again to be sure the problem was solved. In addition to the building science nitty gritty, topics will include how to choose appropriate materials, safety/OSHA considerations and how to ensure a quality installation.
Wednesday, March 9 – 10:30 am to 12:00 pm: Moving Beyond Faith Based Ventilation
In this pairing of Terry Brennan and David White, we are posed the following: As with any mechanical system, the efficacy of ventilation can be compromised by a number of factors, including design flaws, improper installation, inadequate maintenance and operator error—some of which can only be caught through post-installation testing and ongoing monitoring. The presenters will share strategies for avoiding problems in the first place, as well as for identifying and correcting common problems that may arise after installation and commissioning.
Wednesday, March 9 – 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm: Airtightness Testing in Large Buildings
As if one needs to tell you that John Straube is awesome, this session reviews why one would invest in airtightness testing for a large building, how the testing is done, how the results are interpreted, and how this information can be used.
Thursday, March 10 – 10:30 am to 12:00 pm: Roofs: Research and Reality
Two of my favorite practitioners, Kohta Ueno and Peter Marciano will discuss proper roof construction, venting, details, and research. These are two real stars that will help you learn more in 90 minutes to prevent you from going to court for another roof failure than you have in all of your past lives.
