When I was doing multifamily audits, tenants and owners alike complained that the bottom floors were so overheated theyhad to keep their windows open, while the top floor apartments were freezing. It seemed like a pretty obvious problem to address.
What can a conference member expect to learn by attending your track?
Probably I’ll give an overview of how we’re approaching two-pipe steam systems. These present a good opportunity for significant energy savings. But there will be several speakers, covering various topics.
How is your track important to the sustainability field at large?
When you improve the system in a decent-sized multifamily building, you’re improving the efficiency for 100+ dwelling units. That’s a lot easier than working on 100 single-family houses.
Why should conference members attend your track?
We commonly find apartment temperatures in the 80’s in the dead of winter. That’s a big fat juicy target.
What are you most excited to see (to learn) at BE NYC?
A crucial issue is to stop all these oversized boilers from going in. A properly-sized boiler is not only more efficient, it’s cheaper, and it runs better. It’s up to energy professionals to address this, and it’s not difficult. So I’m looking forward to seeing how other people are tackling this problem.
