Green Careers: Emerging Professionals What’s it like for young, green workers? At GreenHomeNYC’s August forum, hear from three energy and sustainability professionals about their career choices, current projects and views on the future. It’s an exciting time for new people entering the green building industry in NYC. Through PlaNYC and subsequent policies, sustainability is increasingly at the core of the city’s future. The way we build, monitor, renovate and inhabit buildings is changing, making for interesting and challenges careers in environmental policy, energy efficiency, engineering, architecture, planning and related disciplines. This month, the forum will find out what it takes to make your mark in this field. Details after the jump! Event Details:

The Green Building Forum is held on the third Wednesday of each month (except December) at 6:30 PM and features presentations by green building practitioners followed by discussion. The events are always free and open to the general public.

About the Speakers

Hilary Berber
Hilary Beber is a Senior Policy Analyst in the NYC Mayor’s Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability. The Office is charged with implementing PlaNYC, the City’s 25-year sustainability outline. The initiatives of PlaNYC combine to provide a roadmap for achieving a 30% reduction in greenhouse gases, improvement of air and water quality, and an increase in transportation options. After graduating Cornell University with a degree in Environmental Engineering, Ms. Beber helped develop and pass the Greener, Greater Buildings Plan (GGBP), a package of legislation to address energy efficiency in New York City’s existing buildings. She currently works on implementation and outreach efforts for the GGBP laws. Ms. Beber also participated in and assisted with the management of the Green Codes Task Force, a technical group that identified impediments and proposed improvements for green building in New York City’s construction codes. Today she works on developing those recommendations into actual code changes. Ms. Beber was honored as an Urban Green Council Service Award winner for her work on the Green Codes Task Force. Ms. Beber serves as a City a representative on BOMA’s Energy and Sustainability Committee as well as ASHRAE- NY’s Sustainability Committee.
Kelly Westby Kelly Westby began working as an Energy Analyst for Steven Winter Associates in June 2011. Her work primarily consists of energy audits, site inspections, and modeling for residential buildings. Prior to working at SWA she was involved in Waste-to-Energy research, solar product research, and energy auditing/benchmarking. She received her BS in Earth and Environmental Engineering from Columbia University. Eric Deuser
Eric Deuser currently serves as a project manager for Jones Lang LaSalle’s Energy and Sustainability Services group. In this role he focuses on the management of energy and sustainability projects for clients whose primary objective is to obtain a LEED certification. He has  conducted LEED EBO+M feasibility studies for over 5 million square feet of commercial building space and is a part of the team delivering integrated energy retrofits across the northeast region based on the model developed for the Empire State Building. Prior to joining the Energy and Sustainability services team, Mr. Deuser worked as an independent consultant to The Durst Organization and Bank of America where he focused exclusively on managing sustainability and LEED projects as part of the construction of the Bank of America Tower at One Bryant Park. He is an active member of the Urban Land Institute and the US Green Building Council’s Emerging Professionals group. Mr. Deuser earned his Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Structural Engineering and a minor in Entrepreneurship and Management from The Johns Hopkins University’s Whiting School of Engineering and was inducted into the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society.
