January Green Building Forum – Showcase: Green Building Materials Catwalk

Join GreenHomeNYC as we do our annual Catwalk down the green runway! Architects, designers and product specialists will reveal building materials, products and resources they recommend using during their creative process. These professionals will discuss everything from recycled aluminum to solar, information resources to using few materials, and more. Some of the firms featured will be Gensler, MKG, Alt-technica and other consultants. All GreenHomeNYC forums are free and open to the public.

Speakers Include: Amelia Amon‘s company, Alt.Technica, designs and develops solar products and installations, including interpretive exhibits for science & environmental centers, a fountain for the Smithsonian National Design Museum, solar freezer carts for Ben & Jerry’s, dark-sky compliant solar LED lights, system components for the NY State Energy Research & Development Authority. Currently a Design Fellow at NYU, she has served on the boards of o2 EcoDesign Network, Northeast Sustainable Energy Assoc., NY Solar Industries Assoc., as NY Chair of the Industrial Designer’s Society of America. and explored energy resources for rural women in India with the Institute for Policy Studies. Anthony Brower is the Sustainable Design Director responsible for oversight of Gensler’s LEED consulting services in the Northeast region. He is involved in the green building industry as a thought and construction process leader, writing exam questions for the U.S. Green Building Councils national accreditation exams, and speaking at sustainable design forums in the New York City area. A registered Architect and strategist focused on managing sustainable building design services for both interior renovations and new buildings. He leverages opportunities from an innate understanding of interior and exterior sustainable programming challenges. Anthony combines with these a unique background as a general contractor, construction manager, and owners’ representative to help manage the firms sustainable design portfolio. Peter Carey, LEED AP, is owner and President of Streamline Material Resourcing (www.streamlinemr.com), a resource library and project consulting firm for architects and designers. Prior to starting his own company last year, Peter has worked for the design firms of Butler Rogers Baskett, Pei Partnership Architects, and Pei Cobb Freed & Partners. Peter is an expert on material selection and performance information for both interior and exterior projects. Trained as an artist at Parsons and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Peter has a creative eye that assists his clients to summon and hone their own unique design identity. Peter served on the jury for Best of NeoCon 2008, and has been a member of the Resource Directors Association since 2002, and is currently on their Executive Board. Ryan Clarke Assoc. AIA, LEED AP, CDT is the co-founder of WhyNotGreen.com, a website with an innovative approach to helping busy building industry professionals get the information they need to make material choices for Green Building projects. Trained as an architect, with a broad range of experiences across building types and firm sizes, Ryan brings his knowledge of building systems, materials and documentation to bear on streamlining the materials research process. Aside from his entrepreneurial pursuits Ryan has been an active member of the architectural community. He has earned a distinction for his service to the American Institute of Architects where he has held leadership positions at Local, State and National level. For his commitment and service to the design community he was awarded the Intern of the Year for 2007 by the American Institute of Architects and was appointed a Fellow of the Design Futures Council’s Leadership Summit on Sustainable Design in 2007. Michelle Devins LEED AP joined Gensler in 2004. She has worked on a wide variety of high profile projects and specializes in corporate interiors for both media and financial firms. In addition to seeing each of her projects though all phases of design, Michelle is a key materials resource at Gensler and provides assistance to other project teams in the material selection process. Committed to integrating sustainability into all projects, she helps introduce designers to new products and educates them on the impact of their specifications. Michelle is a member of the pioneering Gensler team that designed the first LEED certified retail roll-out project for PNC Bank in 2004, which was introduced in over 75 locations during a time when sustainable material manufacturing was in its infancy. She is also a founding member of Gensler’s Innovative Materials Committee and is responsible for researching new materials, technology and manufacturing processes for the firm. Maia Gilman is a Registered Architect and LEED Accredited Professional. She holds a Master of Architecture degree from the University of British Columbia and has over 15 years experience in architecture and construction administration. She is a member of the American Institute of Architects and is NCARB certified. Her work includes cultural, educational, institutional and residential projects, all of which are approached with sustainability and a sense of spirit as the major design inspirations. Maia’s background as a Usui Reiki Master allows her to blend her experience in energy work with architecture to create an approach to building that is uniquely her own. She is a member of the International Association of Reiki Professionals.
