Monthly Forum – Is Hydroelectricity Clean Energy?

Monthly Forum - Is Hydroelectricity Clean Energy?

Governor Hochul is on course to sign a 25-year contract to import Canadian mega-dam hydroelectricity via the Champlain Hudson Power Express, aka CHPE. The power will be transported via a 336-mile high-voltage transmission line from Quebec to NYC, about a third of which will be buried in the Hudson River. Is this the best plan for New York? Is mega-dam hydropower in fact clean energy?

In addition to the forum, our monthly volunteer orientation will take place right before the event, starting at 6p. If you’re interested in joining GreenHomeNYC as a volunteer, please review opportunities on our website, and register for a monthly orientation on Eventbrite.

SPEAKERS
Bradford H. Hager, Ph.D. Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Earth Sciences, MIT

Hager’s research is focused on reducing emissions and removing CO2 from the atmosphere via carbon sequestration. He teaches “Earth Sciences, Energy and the Environment” at MIT. Brad is an avid outdoorsman who spends a month each summer, canoeing arctic rivers.

Dr. Hager will speak about the climate and environmental impacts of Canadian mega-dams.

George Jackman, Ph.D. Senior Habitat Restoration Manager, Riverkeeper

Jackman is a retired NYPD police lieutenant turned aquatic ecologist. He has done extensive research on fish migration and is currently working on dam removals in the Hudson Valley, especially those considered priority barriers to migratory fish.

Dr. Jackman will speak about the ecological impacts of the CHPE cables on the Hudson River and the organisms that live there.

Susan Filgueras Board Member, Stony Point Action Committee for the Environment (SPACE)

SPACE has been at the forefront of the environmental movement in Rockland County for over 25 years, preserving the natural resources and protecting the quality of life that is unique to the area. For example, when Lego Land proposed a new “Water Park“ to be built in the neighboring town of Haverstraw, Susan worked with Town residents and defeated the proposal.

Ms. Filgueras will speak about the economic impact of CHPE.
