September Forum: BIG GREEN

The Green Building Forum is held on the third Wednesday of each month (except December) at 6:30 PM and features presentations by green building practitioners followed by discussion. The events are always free and open to the general public. This month’s topic is BIG GREEN – in recent years in we have been seeing many new green buildings and public spaces popping up all over the world. But what does it take to create these BIG green projects? This month, architects and urban designers will delve into the complexities of how these projects get built. Join us at Trespa’s showroom where speakers from three architectural and urban design firms, Gensler, Cook + Fox and West 8, will explore the issues of bringing green projects from blueprints to actuality.

About the Speakers Architect Matthew Skjonsberg works as a project leader for West 8, a leading international office for urban design and landscape architecture, founded by Adriaan Geuze in 1987. A native of the state of Wisconsin, and of the first generation in his family not to farm, Matthew built projects in the private and public sectors in WI, MN, MI and NM prior to joining West 8. He has been a faculty member teaching architecture at Taliesin, the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, Lawrence University, University of Wisconsin-Stout Polytechnic, and has given lectures and expert workshops at numerous institutions, including the ETH in Zurich, the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam, Parsons in New York, and Harvard GSD in Cambridge. He has participated in diverse symposia, and in 2008 his work ‘Performative Corridors’ (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) was featured in the Swiss Pavilion at the 2008 Venice Biennale, ‘Out There: Architecture Beyond Building’. Serge Appel, AIA, LEEP AP, is an Associate Partner at Cook + Fox. He joined in 1996, and over the past 12 years has helped shape a small architectural practice into a thriving studio of 65 people. He works closely with the firm’s founding partners and has played a key role in many of the firm’s major projects. He was named an Associate in 1999, a Senior Associate in 2006, and an Associate Partner in 2007. Serge has worked on all phases of planning, design, and construction for a range of residential, institutional, and commercial projects. Currently, he is the associate-in-charge of Cook+Fox’s largest project to date, the 2.2 million square foot Bank of America Tower at One Bryant Park. He has been involved since the earliest design phases and now manages the architects’ responsibilities in the ongoing construction process. Prior to working on the Bank of America Tower, Serge was responsible for 360 Madison, a 350,000 square foot, 26 story office building that was called “the best new building in years” by the New York Sun. Serge graduated from McGill University School of Architecture in Montreal, Quebec in 1996. He became a licensed architect in New York State in 2000 and a LEED Accredited Professional in 2004. He speaks frequently on sustainable architecture and the design of the Bank of America Tower. Anthony BrowerAIA, LEED AP, CDT, joined Gensler in 2005. As a registered architect, and a member of Gensler’s Sustainable Design Task force, Anthony manages sustainable design for the firm’s northeast region offices. Anthony is directly involved with the development of firmwide education and LEED training. He is active in sustainable design and planning organizations including the U.S. Green Building Council. Anthony works extensively with LEED within project teams to make the case for sustainable design and develop processes to carry projects through to certification for many of the firm’s sustainable projects around the globe.
