Speaker Bios:
David Hirschler
David is the Deputy Director of Waste Prevention, at the NYC Department of Sanitation, Bureau of Waste Prevention, Reuse and Recycling. David has worked in the recycling and waste prevention field for over 10 years, both in NYC and in the Boston area. David oversees the review and implementation of various product stewardship laws and initiatives, various reuse programs, as well as a variety of public education, technical assistance, and recycling collection programs. Prior to this he created marketing campaigns using community based social marketing methods and managed the solid waste and recycling collection programs for various communities outside of Boston. David received his Masters in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning from Tufts University and his Bachelors in Environmental Science from Boston University.
Charlotte Matthews
Charlotte is responsible for Related’s corporate sustainability and green development activity. Related has developed over $20 billion in real estate and owns over $15 billion of best-in-class mixed-use, residential, retail, office, trade show and affordable properties. Since 2008, the company has built green exclusively, completing 11 LEED Silver and Gold properties and with another 10 underway, including 2 LEED ND neighborhood developments. Charlotte is also faculty for Columbia University’s Masters in Real Estate Development program within the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, and a member of the Market Transformation board. She has been very involved in recent green building legislation through the New York City Green Codes Industry Advisory Committee, Real Estate Board of New York – Sustainability Committee and Real Estate Roundtable – Sustainability Policy Advisory Committee. Charlotte’s career in green building began as the Sustainability Specialist for an architecture firm, during which time she became co-chair of the Boston AIA Committee on the Environment and member of the DOE/EPALab21 Environmental Performance Criteria and LEED for Labs development committees. She moved on to green building consulting and then into construction management to build green buildings before joining Related in 2008. Charlotte has also served on the LEED for New Construction core committee and helped with the consolidation of LEED from multiple specialized rating systems into one. Charlotte holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from Brown University.
Daniel Rieber
Daniel has 23 years experience working in the field of energy efficiency. For four years Mr. Rieber performed energy audits and was a construction manager, in multi-family buildings for the Weatherization Department of New York City Housing Preservation and Development’s Energy Conservation Division. Currently, Dan serves as the Weatherization Director at Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation (NMIC). In that capacity he continues conducting energy audits and construction management for the Weatherization Assistance Program at NMIC. Dan is also an active board member of the Association For Energy Affordability (AEA) for the last 16 years and for the past four years a member of the NYSWDA board of directors. Dan is certified as an EPA Lead Paint Supervisor and has a BA degree from The State University of New York at Stony Brook. Dan has presented at past ACI conferences, National and Regional WAP conferences, NESEA and at each of the Multifamily Conferences held in NYC and Chicago.
